I've recently had the revelation that Mondays are difficult because your mind has to process a lot more that most days of the week.
On the week end you may forget something or fail to get to something and nobody is upset... Not really, it is the weekend after all.
Then Monday comes along and you need to process the work of the day. Work harder to recall the work from last Friday and keep reminding yourself that it is not Sunday 2.0
It's a lot to process. So I've started to do things to declutter my thinking from the low value add and high stress stuff to the big value add activities of varying levels of stress. Declutterig includes:
- printing out my schedule the night before to keep my stress lower in the morning. If things are runnig tight, I don't have to wait 20min for my computer to deliver my calendar.
- meditating at night. It really help you practice clearing away distracting thoughts.
- writing reminders into my calendar. It doesn't always work, but at least then I can stop worrying about it until it's time to do the work.
- schedule staff work. It has a time and place in my job. I shouldn't be wondering when I will be able to fit it in.
- let myself vent appropriately. You gotta have some safe place where you can let lose one the insanity and let it go - or develop a plan of response.
- make appointments for fun. Dinner with friends or time on the phone with family. It helps me keep perspective. And is a good place to get a sympathetic ear when needed.
- take a hot bath. It really is more relaxing than a shower.
- workout. It's a great way to clear your head and the endorphines don't hurt either.
Now if only I could truly practice what I preach.
